Trek Objectives

Heart Research Australia

1. RAISE AWARENESS OF AND FUNDS FOR HEART RESEARCH AUSTRALIA

Heart Research Australia supports world-class and emerging researchers to conduct ground-breaking research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

The 2021 expedition’s goal is to raise funds through sponsorship, donation and increase awareness of the non-government funded efforts of Heart Research Australia.

Madigan died from cardiovascular disease in 1947 aged 58. Here we are today, some 74 years later and cardiovascular disease is still the leading underlying cause of death in Australia.

In July of 2021, Robert Porcaro and Brigid Shute will follow the Madigan line – trekking in Cecil Madigan’s footprints to recreate the journey and raise funds for Heart Research Australia.

Brigid Shute

2. FOR BRIGID SHUTE TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE HER FIRST MAJOR EXPEDITION

This involves seasoned adventurer Rob Porcaro working together with first timer Brigid Shute to train and build a plan that will help Brigid achieve her goal.

3. TO MARK THE 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF ROB PORCARO’S FIRST MADIGAN LINE CROSSING SOLO AND ON FOOT

Rob was in his mid forties when he became the first person to trek solo and on foot across the Madigan Line. Now 20 years since his first Simpson Expedition, and in his early 60s, Rob wants to mark the milestone by doing it all again; proving to himself and the world that age is not a barrier. The only barriers are ones people preconceive, and we internalise.
